Colour Palette (background, text, text box, font)
Navy blue (#000080): Professional uses of blue carry connotations of reliability, intelligence and wisdom, which is suitable for this educational website (the audience may trust the information on the website more). It is also associated with freedom, intuition, imagination, inspiration, which reinforces the genre of the website (art and illustration). Navy blue evokes feelings of power and authority rather than the ideas of relaxation and peace that go along with more standard shades of blue. This shade leans more towards ideas of authority and importance, which reinforce the formal side of the website: it is designed to offer audience knowledge and information to learn and improve.
Tomato red (#ff6347): Red is used professionally to capture attention, elicit emotion, and convey confidence, which is perfect for grabbing the audience’s attention. Red is also associated with passion, excitement, and energy. Since the target audience is passionate about art, red is the colour that can emit that particular feeling. Tomato red is light shade of red carries some of the symbolism of pink but stronger and less delicate that brighter pinks. It also has some of the warmth and energy of orange. This shade also infuses the website with energy without being overly powerful and stimulating. It reinforces the informal side of the website: it is designed to allow audience to have fun and express themselves.
=> These two colours will create contrast and make the website stand out. This pair is quite suitable for the website as it injects youthful energy and doesn't appear too serious.
Black and white - #000000 & #ffffff: This combination creates a sophisticated and professional look and is used in every online website. Although quintessentially opposite in a cultural and visual sense, black and white work well together and create contrast by making certain elements pop out.
Dark grey (#545454): A neutral colour that balances out the contrast between navy blue & tomato red and black & white. I chose a darker shade to neutralize and make the tomato red stand out more, since that colour works better on dark background.
Fonts
Logo - Bauhaus 93: A sans serif font that has a strong character and voice of its own. The font is bold and can easily grasp the audience attention, and makes the website appear approachable and friendly. The i's are lowercase to reference the symbol of “information”. The “tat” in “station” is smaller than the rest of the letters and edited to make a station or house along with a triangle on top. The station or house conveys the website’s message: It is a place where the audience can stop by and pick off information about illustration, a station full of materials. This particular font is also used in architecture, sculpture, crafts, and engineering. Though the website does not offer knowledge regarding these areas, the font reinforces the idea of allowing audiences to build their own little stations, which are e-portfolio (figuratively speaking), and display their work.
Title & Heading – Futura PT: A sans serif font that connotes modernity and minimalism. It is simple, contemporary, and straightforward, and is in bold and uppercased to catch the audience’s attention. It also makes the website appear more futuristic and minimalist, which fits with the modern digitally drawn illustrations. The font is thick, round and rather short, which convey stability and directness.
Body text/paragraph - Georgia: A serif font that connotes formality and authority. It is classic and sophisticated and projects a sense of tradition that could be understood as a reference to traditional media. Moreover, serifs often lend a bit more legibility at smaller scales.
Buttons - Europa: A sans serif font that is similar to Futura PT (both are geometric typefaces). The letters' forms are simple and create a universal feel.
The letter-spacing is pretty wide overall, which makes the copy easier to read and comprehend as it allows room to breathe. Also, the audience would be more interested in the visuals and graphics rather than text.
=> The website communicates a feeling of reliability and safety, with the intention of gaining audiences’ trust. Since it is an educational website that provides news and information regarding illustration, the audience expects the information to be useful and trustworthy. It is not luxurious or high-end, but a simple, friendly, and futuristic website that gravitates towards modern and digital art. It is suitable for the target audience, from young art students to actual illustrators. The spacious fonts also connote freedom – viewers are free to express their perspectives and imagination by uploading their artwork and building e-portfolios onto the website.
